When hiking in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, I find my mind sometimes slips into repetitive thought processes that mirror the monotonous rhythm of keeping a good pace up a steep incline. As is often the case, these processes are musical earworms, endlessly looping and mutating. The most fascinating and enduring of these is a sort of unspecific, self-generating imitative music in the style of J.S. Bach. This piece embodies that involuntary musical generation.
